Rest is an important practice, especially during challenging times. Yet it’s often the first practice to get overlooked when things feel too overwhelming or busy.
Without making the space for rest, the effects of stress can be cumulative with detrimental impacts on our health and communities.
With this in mind, rest is an essential practice, especially for people who are marginalized and are dealing with systemic stressors.
However, many people find restorative yoga challenging due to trauma, anxiety, neurodivergence, lack of comfort or accessibility.
So, how can we actively rest in challenging times?
That is the question at the core of our Restorative Yoga Series: Making Rest Practices Accessible.
This series includes a diverse and dynamic group of presenters who will look at restorative yoga in a broad and inclusive way.
In this workshop series, we'll explore:
-
Accessibility and trauma-informed considerations for people of color, disabled people, neurodivergent folks, people with larger bodies, and people with chronic illness
-
The therapeutic potential of Yoga Nidra
-
The anatomy and physiology of rest and the nervous system
-
Adaptive rest practices using a chair, wheelchair, couch, and bed
-
How to connect with our spirit through a consideration of the body’s limitations and our own mortality
-
Resourcing yourself as a teacher to support students as they rest
-
And more!

“In my ideal yoga world, all people from traditionally marginalized communities would practice still, contemplative styles of yoga. And, in that same world, yoga teachers and studios would be more aware of how to hold space for these students. These opportunities to experience sensation, embodiment, rest, and spaciousness are exactly the right practices for those of us for whom stillness is unfamiliar.” –Tamika Caston-Miller

Rest Well, Lead Different: Grounding in Rest to Disrupt Systems On and Off the Mat
with Shawn J. Moore
> Learn more about Workshop #3
Learning to befriend rest is an essential tool in navigating the day-to-day with many chronic conditions. In this workshop, we’ll discuss considerations for working with students who live with chronic illness, systemic energy limitation, and pain-related disabilities so that they can feel seen, heard, and supported through rest-based practices. We’ll touch on some specific chronic illness concerns and conditions that we may need to adapt for, such as dysautonomia, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and more.
We’ll also address how to navigate leading restorative yoga classes (and teaching yoga in general) when we ourselves hold these various lived-experiences, as well as how we might incorporate rest as daily practice in our lives beyond the yoga mat. Included will be an experiential trauma-informed restorative yoga practice to explore and integrate the topics we cover.
This session is led by Katie Blecker (she/her), who is an experienced yoga teacher living with multiple complex chronic illnesses and disabilities.
> Learn more about Workshop #4
In an era calling for sustainable, equitable, and transformative change, yoga teachers stand at an intersection of personal and collective healing while navigating our own place in challenging systems designed to dysregulate and desensitize. This workshop offers a reflective space to explore how restorative practices can serve not just as teaching tools, but as essential foundations for leadership and collective liberation in the yoga community and beyond.
We’ll discover how deepening our rest practices strengthens our ability to hold sacred space for others, creating ripples of renewal that extend far beyond the yoga studio. Drawing from restorative yoga principles and Engaged Buddhism framework, this session highlights how cultivating restful awareness enables us to better support those who are challenging systemic inequities while sustaining our own commitment to making yoga truly accessible.
Through this session, we’ll:
- Explore how restorative yoga practices can enhance our capacity to hold nourishing space for community members engaged in social change work
- Reflect on our individual leadership journey and examine how rest practices can transform our approach to our own care and our ability to serve community
- Experience the power of collective rest through a guided restorative practice that nurtures a sense of personal renewal and alignment

Making Restorative Yoga Accessible for Folks in Larger Bodies
with Shannon Kaneshige
> Learn more about Workshop #5
Accessible and Adaptive Yoga teacher Rodrigo Souza, who uses a wheelchair full-time, will discuss the benefits of pacing our lives with periods of self-care and rest. He’ll explore how we can incorporate restorative yoga into our own practice, and how to share restorative yoga with students who use wheelchairs.
Remaining in a wheelchair for more than three hours leads to muscle stiffness, as the hips and knees remain in a constant flexed position. Thus, it is vital to take breaks and participate in Restorative Yoga practices throughout the day.
In this session, Rodrigo will lead us in a soothing chair and bed restorative practice, gently releasing muscular tension and allowing us to revisit our bodies with loving-kindness.
> Learn more about Workshop #6
As a fat yoga student and educator, Shannon Kaneshige knows firsthand how upsetting it is to walk into a restorative class expecting rest and support and instead leave feeling frustrated and defeated.
In this session, Shannon will discuss common concerns and challenges faced by larger-bodied students and how to address them in a compassionate and empowering way. They will explore techniques for increasing space and support in asana, how to make restorative practices accessible and comfortable for students with larger bodies, and how to use inclusive, fat-positive language that encourages folks to make each posture their own.
Join us as we create a space where all bodies can find ease and rest.

How Neurodivergent People Can Have Better Experiences of Rest Through Yoga
with Theo Wildcroft
> Learn more about Workshop #7
Let's relearn to rest by freeing ourselves from perfectionism. In this immersive workshop, we will explore rest as a practice of liberation, unraveling the ways white supremacy culture has shaped our relationship to rest, self-care, and the pressure to "do it right".
Together, we will unlearn the need to perfect our rest, resist the urge to commodify our self-care, and instead, reconnect with the truth of what it means to deeply restore ourselves. Through embodied practice bolstered by guided reflection and discussion, we will cultivate a new understanding of rest—one rooted in freedom, presence, and ease.
Tejal will conclude the session with a “working with what you have” guided restorative practice, which will explore a creative and open-minded approach to supported rest. The practice will be designed to use the space and supports you currently have available to you, which may include your couch, your bed, a chair, or the floor, and any pillows, cushions, blankets or other at-home props you have access to.
> Learn more about Workshop #8
In this workshop, we'll use theory and practice, experimentation, and lived experience to explore the intersection of neurodiversity and rest—why neurodivergent people might need more (or less) rest, why they might need to experience rest in unusual ways, and what we can do to make rest-based practices more accessible and rewarding for neurodivergent people.
This session will include a little accessible and optional movement and play, a little info-dumping, a little conversation, and an accessible, safe, and simple yoga nidra.
Please be prepared to have your preconceptions lovingly challenged, your opinions on neurodivergence gently radicalized, and your practice and pedagogy enhanced. Whether you are neurotypical, self-diagnosed, peer-diagnosed, or formally diagnosed, you are welcome in this space.

Is it a coincidence that all yoga classes end with Savasana, corpse pose? Or is yoga practice preparation for death?
In this session, Jivana will discuss the yoga teachings surrounding health and mortality. These ancient texts all speak to our immortal spiritual nature in a way that can shift our understanding of ourselves.

“Over the years, living with complex chronic illness has often led me to feelings of inner disharmony. Yoga, especially in rest-based practices, is THE thing that brings me back to my self time and time again, through developing deeper experiences of equanimity, radical-acceptance, and gentleness.”
–Katie Blecker

“The barriers to accessing modern yoga that affect marginalised groups such as people of colour, disabled people, and the underpaid, can also be a factor in accessing high quality rest, and yoga nidra practices. To be clear, if you are working hard, not paid a lot, can’t lie in a traditional savasana, or just don’t feel welcome in yoga studios, you might also have disturbed rest, a need for more rest than others, and also find many yoga-related rest practices to be inaccessible.”

"As a queer person, I think one of the ways I have responded to homophobia is by people-pleasing and over-working, trying to make up for any perceived deficiency in myself. This means that my nervous system is overactive and what benefits me the most is to really slow down. Restorative yoga is the best medicine for being queer in a world that only accepts part of me. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who is this workshop series designed for?
This workshop series is designed as continuing education for qualified yoga teachers.
Yoga students, practitioners, and those who are interested in learning about accessible approaches to Restorative Yoga and rest practices are also welcome to enroll. (If you are interested in enrolling but are not yet a qualified yoga teacher, please refer to the FAQ below, "Do I need to be a certified yoga teacher?")
This live online workshop series also includes access to the workshop recordings and resources for 1 year. If you're unable to join live, you are welcome to access the content via the recordings. For those accessing the content live or via the replays, there are opportunities available to introduce yourself and connect with other trainees within the online portal.
Are there any pre-requisites or required reading? Do I need to be a certified yoga teacher?
This course is designed as continuing education for qualified yoga teachers, however it is not a requirement to have completed a 200 hr Yoga Teacher Training to enroll in this course.
We will explore various Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra and rest practices, with a focus on accessible and inclusive approaches to these practices.
Please note - this 20-hour live online workshop series is not alone designed to qualify graduates to teach Restorative Yoga classes if they have not also completed a 200-hour (minimum) foundational yoga teacher training / comprehensive foundational training in teaching Restorative Yoga, in addition to this specialized continuing education workshop series.
We welcome those who are not qualified yoga teachers to enroll to support their personal practice.
We welcome those who are not yoga teachers but qualified in other complementary fields (eg. physical therapy) to take this training to further their knowledge and skills to enhance their current associated offerings, within the scope of practice of their qualifications.
There is no required reading. The online portal for this series includes a recommended resource list for those interested in further study.
Is this workshop series all online? How does it work?
Yes this workshop series is 100% online. Here's how it works:
- Upon enrollment you'll gain access to your online portal, which includes some introductory details, the workshop schedule and outlines, the link to access the live online course via Zoom, and a resource list for (completely optional) further study.
- All live sessions will be offered through Zoom, a video-conferencing application. You can watch and interact on your phone, tablet, or computer. The training will be (auto) live-captioned.
- Captioned live session recordings and resources will be available for those enrolled in the course via our online portal for 1 year. (Captions on recordings will be edited for accuracy / accessibility, within 1 week of the live session).
- Once you have reviewed all the content (either live, or via the recordings), you will self-certify that you've completed the workshop series. Then you'll receive a PDF certificate of completion, which can be submitted for CEUs with Yoga Alliance.
What if I can't attend the live Zoom sessions? Can I still enroll?
Yes, all sessions will be recorded and uploaded to your online portal within 24-48 hours of each live workshop. We encourage you to attend live if possible, however if this isn't possible due to scheduling or time-zone challenges, you are definitely very welcome to participate via the recordings. Series registrants will have access to the workshop recordings and resources for a whole year from the first live workshop date.
How long is this workshop series?
This series consists of 10 x 2 hour live online workshops, led by Tamika Caston-Miller, Indu Arora, Katie Blecker, Shawn J. Moore, Rodrigo Souza, Shannon Kaneshige, Tejal Patel, Theo Wildcroft, Arturo Peal and Jivana Heyman (20 hours total, all live and online, with access to captioned replays for 1 year included).
Upcoming live workshop dates are:
April 24th - May 27th, 2025
Tuesdays & Thursdays
9am-11am PDT | 12pm-2pm EDT | 5pm-7pm BST (UK)
Do I need special equipment or software for this course?
You will get the most out of this offering if you attend via Zoom on a desktop / laptop computer with a webcam and microphone. However, you are welcome to watch and participate on your phone, tablet, or other internet-connected device. Appearing on video or speaking on the mic (or active participation during the workshops) is not required for participants.
We recommend installing the Zoom application on your device to get the full functionality.
Your online portal, where you access the series content, is web based and can be accessed through any internet browser, via various devices (computer, phone, tablet etc).
To easily access your course via a mobile device, you can download the free Kajabi app.
Kajabi is the platform we use to host this workshop series and create your online portal. Once you download the free Kajabi app, go ahead and sign in with the email you and password you selected upon registration in the course, and that's it!
With the Kajabi mobile app, you'll be able to access the course content right from your phone. The app also automatically saves your progress, even when you switch between sessions and devices (which is particularly helpful if you are catching up via the recordings, and marking each session as complete when done).
Each workshop will include a sample Restorative Yoga / Yoga Nidra / guided rest practice, relevant to the focus of that session.
We invite participants to have any props / supports available to make the practices offered as comfortable and accessible to them as possible, which may include the following yoga props, or any household items that offer similar support / comfort, and space to move freely:
- Yoga Mat or comfortable space for practicing (which may be your bed, couch, wheelchair or a chair)
- 1-2 chairs, or your wheelchair + 1 chair
- 2 yoga blocks (or additional pillows / cushions)
- 1 yoga strap (or alternative - eg. belt / scarf)
- 1-2 bolsters (or couch cushions / pillows)
- 2-4 blankets (or towels)
- 2-3 bed or throw pillows / cushions
- Access to a sofa / chair / ottoman and wall space
- Scarf / unscented eye cover (small towel / tshirt)
- Props for sensory comfort (cozy blankets, fidget toys, cool rocks, furry friends, favorite scents etc.)
- Any props as needed to lay down / recline comfortably
*Specific prop recommendations for each workshop are provided for registrants within our online course portal
*Please don't let lack of access to 'traditional / official' yoga props deter you from this offering - you are welcome to be creative with supports you have around your home, and for Restorative Yoga - pillows and blankets from your bed are perfect props! The key intention of this series is making rest practices accessible.
You also may like to have a journal and writing utensils or a note-taking device nearby for reflections and/or to take notes.
Will the workshops include asana practice?
There will be a guided Restorative Yoga / Yoga Nidra / rest practice relevant to the focus of the particular session included in the first 9 x workshops. The final session will include a guided meditation.
A variety of practices will be offered, for practice on a mat, bed, couch, or chair/s (and a combination of these). Throughout the series our presenters will offer tools for practicing specifically in a chair or wheelchair, on a bed, and using your couch or other furniture / supports from around your home.

You also may like to have a journal and writing utensils or a note-taking device nearby for reflections and/or to take notes.
How long do I have access to the workshop replays and resources?
You will have access to our online student portal, including captioned recordings of all live workshops and associated resources, for 1 year from the first live workshop date.
Can I earn continuing education credit or contact hour CEUs for this training?
Yes. This workshop series is worth 20 Continuing Education hours. Eligible yoga teachers will earn CE credit through Yoga Alliance. Upon completion of the series content, you will receive a downloadable certificate you can submit for credit.
As this series is led by a group of presenters, Yoga Alliance CEU requests will need to be entered manually, rather than under one individual teacher as a YACEP. Details for lodging hours are provided for those who enroll and complete the series.
Can I share the videos or other resources with other teachers who aren't enrolled in this series?
The content shared through this workshop series is for your personal use. We ask that you don't share videos or resources included with anyone who hasn't enrolled.
Any free resources that the facilitators share with overlapping information, or links to connect with their work, we encourage you to share widely (or even better, encourage your friends and colleagues to enroll in this workshop series and/or engage with paid resources / offerings from our presenters to support the work they do).
Is active participation from attendees required?
It is not a requirement to engage in active participation during our live workshops.
Attendees are welcome to have their camera on or off during the live workshops. If attendees choose to have their camera on, they will only be captured on the recordings if they choose to come on mic to ask a question or share, while their camera is on.
Each session will have time available for Q&A. Attendees will be welcome to ask questions using the Zoom chat feature, or by coming on mic to verbally ask a question or share, as appropriate. While facilitators are presenting, attendee microphones will be 'muted' to avoid accidental background noise / distractions.
Each workshop will include a practice component (guided Restorative Yoga / Yoga Nidra / rest practice). Attendees are welcome to practice along, but observing, or resting in your own way, is also welcomed.
We invite attendees (and presenters) to honour their own accessibility needs during our workshops. Flexible ways to participate and communicate will be offered. Stim / fidget toys and sensory comfort items are welcome.
Are payment plans available?
Yes, you may split your tuition into 3 monthly payments.
Each pricing tier has this payment plan option available.
Payment installments are charged monthly, based on the date of your enrollment. For example, if you sign up on March 30th, your first installment will be charged upon enrollment, and your remaining two payments will be deducted on April 30th and May 30th.
Are scholarships available for this workshop series?
If our sliding scale pricing options are financially inaccessible for you, we do have a limited number of partial scholarships available. Please fill out this partial scholarship application form to apply.
Can I enroll in one or more individual workshops, rather than the whole series?
We don't have an option to enroll for only some workshops in the series (logistically, the way the series is set up we are unable to separate access to individual sessions), however enrollment in the series includes 1 year of access to the recordings and resources, so if you are unable to attend all (or any) sessions live, you'll have access to work your way through the recordings at your own pace.
We are also passionate about uplifting a variety of voices and experiences, and promoting the value of learning from the different perspectives that a range of presenters with shared and also individual / unique experience and knowledge can offer.
If you are asking this question due from a financial accessibility perspective, we do our best to make our offerings accessible, including financially, and therefore, in the spirit of equity, don't want to provide less to those who have less access to financial resources. We invite you to consider our tiered pricing options, payment plans and partial scholarships, which are designed to make this offering more financially accessible, without restricting access to the content.
What if I need a refund?
Our refund policy for this workshop series is as follows:
- Request for cancellation of enrollment 8 days or more prior to the date of the first live workshop will receive a full refund / cancellation of any pending payment plan charges.
- Request for cancellation of enrollment within 7 days of the first live workshop date will receive a 50% refund of the total enrollment fee (if paid in full), or cancellation of pending payment plan installments equal to 50% of the total enrollment fee.
- No refunds will be granted once the live Zoom sessions have commenced.
What if I need help?
If you need help at any time you can contact us and we'll be in touch as soon as possible.
Our contact page - linked above - also includes FAQs which may answer your question/s most efficiently.
